This weeks auctions

I read today that Americans are selling their prized possessions in record numbers. Craigslist for sale ads are up 70% and ebay is flooded with family treasures. As for me, I’m still taking pictures of and steadily getting rid of all my stuff at usdebooks.com. I have less stuff than last week and I still have more stuff to give away, sell, list, etc.
This week my auctions on ebay are
bushplug.com starting at $4.99
Shortfatandbald.com starting at $9.99

And a fleece vest, ornament and the movie Limbo from my Alaska movie making days starting at $4.99

Still looking for something fun to do with the Bushplugs (and shoving them up my ass isn’t something I think of as fun or they would probably have already gone there!) send your suggestions.

Goodbye to the 99-cent menu at Jack in the Box

Just a few months ago (the last time I ate at Jack in the Box), I remember thinking how great the 99-cent menu was. Two tacos, chicken sandwich, burger, fries, etc. Back when I was living the rough life, one of my favorite cheap meals was a 99-cent burger add lettuce and tomato (free then) and some fries for $2.12.
Last night I needed to grab a quick bite in Waikiki and figured the old meal would be there still…I was wrong. Fast food must be feeling the pinch too because here is the breakdown.
burger $1.39, add lettuce and tomato +.20 cents, barbecue sauce +.20 cents, fries $1.39. Total came out right around $3.50.
I know that doesn’t sound like much but think about this… that’s an increase of $1.38 or an increase of slightly over 66% in a few months which means that the dollar menu is now the $1.66 menu. If you take that to the broader economy it means it now costs you $166 dollars for what cost $100. And this means that you need to earn $16,666 to pay $10,000 worth of living expenses in a year. Or $33k to pay for $20k or $66k to pay for $40k or $132k to pay for $80k. If your paycheck was $80k last year, did you get a raise of $52k? Because you will need it to pay for the same lifestyle.
The price of the good stuff has gone up too, it’s not just the fast food dollar menu.

'Father' of LSD dies at 102

NEW YORK (AP) — Albert Hofmann, father of the mind-altering drug LSD whose medical discovery grew into a notorious “problem child,” died Tuesday. He was 102.
Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, in 1998, long maintained that LSD had many medical uses.
Hofmann died of a heart attack at his home in Basel, Switzerland, according to Rick Doblin, president of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, in a statement posted on the association’s Web site.
Hofmann’s hallucinogen inspired — and arguably corrupted — millions in the 1960’s hippie generation. For decades after LSD was banned in the late 1960s, Hofmann defended his invention.
“I produced the substance as a medicine. … It’s not my fault if people abused it,” he said.
The Swiss chemist discovered lysergic acid diethylamide-25 in 1938 while studying the medicinal uses of a fungus found on wheat and other grains at the Sandoz pharmaceuticals firm in Basel.
He became the first human guinea pig of the drug when a tiny amount of the substance seeped onto his finger during a repeat of the laboratory experiment April 16, 1943.

Fox News Lincoln-Douglas Graphic Shows Frederick Douglass

Hillary Clinton grabbed some headlines this past weekend by challenging Barack Obama to a “Lincoln-Douglas style” debate. Of course, she was referencing the debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas during their Illinois Senate race.
But someone apparently missed that memo at Fox & Friends, and MSNBC noticed — last night on “Verdict” with Dan Abrams and tonight on “Countdown” with Keith Olbermann.

Grand Theft Auto Newsflash

A man was stabbed last night while queueing to buy one of the first copies of controversial new video game Grand Theft Auto 4. Shocked fellow gamers – including young children – initially thought the stabbing was part of a stunt put on by shop bosses to whip up excitement about the title’s release.

A White Veteran in Defense of Reverand Jeremiah Wright

On Monday, Wright criticized the U.S. government as imperialist and stood by his suggestion that the United States invented the HIV virus as a means of genocide against minorities. “Based on this Tuskegee experiment and based on what has happened to Africans in this country, I believe our government is capable of doing anything,” he said.

For those who aren’t familiar with the Tuskegee experiment, it involved 400 black men that the U.S. Public Health Service used as guinea pigs to see what the long term effects of syphilis were.

Wright recently retired from the church. He became an issue in Obama’s presidential bid when videos circulated of Wright condemning the U.S. government for allegedly racist and genocidal acts. In the videos, some several years old, Wright called on God to “damn America.” He also said the government created the AIDS virus to destroy “people of color.”

Wright and every other black person in the United States ( along with all the red, brown, pink, tan, yellow, and white persons) has more than enough of a reason to distrust the United States and to consider it capable of the most nefarious crimes against humanity. From the CIA selling drugs in inner cities to the assassination of MLK to genocide committed against Native Americans, Blacks, Japanese, Iraqis and Vietnamese. The United States has committed some of the worst crimes in history and continues to put profits ahead of people, to push a neo-conservative and racist agenda, and to use it’s ‘blood and treasure’ to destabilize governments and ideologies that it does not agree with. Hell yeah the chickens came home to roost and to Reverend Wright’s “God Damn America” this white man gives a hale and hearty “A-Men, Brother Wright.” Do I buy that the U.S. government started the AIDS virus or had a part in the bombing of the World Trade Center? No. As a veteran and once proud citizen, I can’t believe that, but I certainly acknowledge the possibility of both and that should be enough to exonerate Reverend Wright.
God bless you for saying what you believe Reverend.
Chris Damitio
For those interested below is a slightly more full context of Wright’s roosting speech than you’ve probably seen in the media..

“America’s chickens are coming home to roost! We took this country by terror away from the Sioux, the Apache, the Arawak, the Comanche, the Arapaho, the Navajo. Terrorism! We took Africans from their country to build our way of ease and kept them enslaved and living in fear. Terrorism! We bombed Grenada and killed innocent civilians, babies, non-military personnel. We bombed the black civilian community of Panama with stealth bombers and killed unarmed teenagers and toddlers, pregnant mothers and hard-working fathers. We bombed Gadafi’s home and killed his child. “Blessed are they who bash your children’s head against a rock!” We bombed Iraq. We killed unarmed civilians trying to make a living. We bombed a plant in Sudan to payback for the attack on our embassy. Killed hundreds of hard-working people; mothers and fathers who left home to go that day, not knowing that they would never get back home. We bombed Hiroshima! We bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye! Kids playing in the playground, mothers picking up children after school, civilians – not soldiers – people just trying to make it day by day. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and Black South Africans, and now we are indignant? Because the stuff we have done overseas has now been brought back into our own front yards! America’s chickens are coming home to roost! Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred and terrorism begets terrorism.”

Ruining my credibility as a film connoiseur

a film review by Chris Damitio
If you have any respect for my taste in movies…you will probably lose it if you go and see Doomsday. I caught Neil Marshall’s latest film at the dollar theater yesterday which could go partway to explaining why I liked it so much. If I had paid $10…ah hell, you know what? If I had paid $10, I would still have liked it better than just about anything else that I’ve seen in the sci-fi genre in a long time.
First off, let me explain, this movie has problems. Why are Scottish people cannibals when there are huge herds of feral cattle on the roads? Is it actually easier to make crossbows instead of using ammunition? Are people so dull that they would pass by boxes containing potentially useful equipment hundreds of times without opening them? Why do blast doors open onto a highway and why is there a simple cave entrance? Get the point? The continuity of the storyline here requires such an enormous suspension of disbelief that you just have to give up completely, but once you do, it’s as enjoyable a ride through Mr. Toads land as you can have, complete with scenes from every post apocalyptic slasher film ever made and with a bit of sword and armor stuff thrown in too.
A rock star cannibal punk rock cult of mindless cannon fodder just waiting for someone to tell them that “If you’re hungry, eat a piece of your friend”. Rhona Mitra and that amazing smirk carry the movie despite the fact that instead of getting a phone with a digital camera she likes to take her eye out and hold it around corners.
This was one of those movies where there is so much blood and gush that you can’t really take it seriously and yet when they were carving up the ‘meat’, I felt myself get a little queasy and heard groans from the hobos in the audience.
The back story didn’t make complete sense, the action didn’t make much sense (like why can a bunch of punk rock cannibals take out two heavily armored military vehicles but they can’t figure out how to use the guns and weapons they take?), and the ending didn’t wrap things up and rather sloppily left the door open for a sequel.
Let’s face it, this movie was a real piece of shit. I loved it. I can’t remember hoping for a sequel this much since I saw Star Wars in 1977.

Buffett: Recession will be long and hard

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Warren Buffett, the world’s richest person, said on Monday the U.S. economy is in a recession that will be more severe than most people expect.
Buffett made his comments on CNBC television after his Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) (BRKb.N) agreed to invest $6.5 billion in the takeover of chewing gum maker Wm Wrigley Jr Co (WWY.N) by Mars Inc in a $23 billion transaction.
“This is not a field of specialty for me, but my general feeling is that the recession will be longer and deeper than most people think,” Buffett said. “This will not be short and shallow.
“I think consumers are feeling gas and food prices,” he added, “and not feeling they’ve got a lot of money for other things.”

A Cautionary Tale about Your Credit and Debit Cards

Here is a small part of my weekend for your consideration. I’ve been doing the production design and co-producing a short film called Halloween Hodgepodge and on Saturday we had our first day of shooting. At lunch time, the director asked me if I could go grab food for the crew somewhere. I told him I had no money and he handed me his credit card and told me to just sign his name sloppy. I had my doubts it would work since I am always being asked for ID when I use my own cards. Here is what happened:
At the restaurant I ordered a huge amount of food, enough for 25 hungry people. The bill was considerable and the cashier mentioned this while asking to see my ID. I explained that I didn’t have it with me and she looked at the back of the card saying “Well, you haven’t signed the back of your card, but if you do, then I can match it to your signature on the receipt”. I was shocked at the complicity. None the less, I signed the back of the director’s credit card and then, I screwed up and started to sign my own name on the receipt. The cashier noted this and said, “Why did you put that circle looking thing at the beginning of this one?” I said, “I thought it owuld be funny if they didn’t match since I am signing both in front of you.” She laughed and told me to bring my ID the next time.
While I waited for the food I went to the grocery store across the street to get water, cigarettes, and other supplies for the crew. At the register was a big sign that said “Anyone using a credit card will be asked to show ID” I decided to go for it anyway. The cashier asked me for ID and I told her that I ahd signed the back so she chould match the signatures. She said “Okay, but next time bring your ID.” and the transaction cleared.
In neither case did I have to show my ID, mainly because these were nice people who were doing the nice thing and helping me out, but what if I had stolen the card instead of having the director tell me to use it?
It’s something to think about….anyway, don’t lose your cards.
